Ques. Who conducts JoSAA counselling?
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority, set up by the Ministry of Education, conducts counselling for IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs together.
Ques. How many rounds are there?
Usually six rounds, followed by CSAB special rounds for seats that remain vacant.
Ques. Do I need a separate registration for NITs and IITs?
No. One JoSAA registration covers IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. IIT choices appear only if you have a JEE Advanced rank.
Ques. What is the difference between float, freeze and slide?
Freeze keeps your seat and ends your participation. Float keeps the seat but leaves you open to a better choice. Slide keeps the institute and allows an upgrade within it.
Ques. How many choices should I fill?
As many as you would genuinely accept. A longer list never reduces your chance at a higher choice, because allotment moves down your list in order.
Ques. What is the seat acceptance fee?
Around Rs 45,000 for General, OBC-NCL and EWS, and Rs 20,000 for SC, ST and PwD candidates. It is adjusted against your college fee later.
Ques. Can I take part in CSAB after accepting a JoSAA seat?
Yes, if you did not select the option to stay out of special rounds during reporting. Read the CSAB rules carefully before deciding.
Ques. How do I know my chances before counselling?
Check your score first with the JEE Main score calculator, then compare your expected rank against last year's closing ranks for the branches you want.
